5 Strategies To Make Your Charity Auction a Success

Hosting your own charity auction can be a little bit intimidating for a beginner, how do you get started, how much planning should go into the event, and probably the biggest question of all, how do you host a successful charity auction if you have never before? If you are new to charity auctions all together a charity auction is most generally known as a nonprofit fundraising event where a nonprofit organization will generally raise money by collecting donations such as experiences, trips, items, gift cards, and more; and selling them to the highest bidder on a live, online or silent auction. If you are in the planning process of a charity auction or are hoping to plan one soon, we have 5 simple strategies to help you make your charity auction a success.

1. Choose the Correct Type Of Auction

Before beginning the entire auction process and planning stage, the first and foremost thing that you can do in order to help your charity auction succeed is going to be to choose the correct type of auction. There are live, online, and silent auctions, many people will even combine two of the three in a good combination and to also reach a wider audience. Choosing the correct type of auction will require proper research to find out who your donors will likely be, and how they will best interact with the auction. In order to connect with your donors properly you might benefit from sending out a survey that asks strategic questions that will help you understand your audience as well as what they are interested in, and how they will best interact with your auction.

2. Secure Your Large Items Far in Advance

This is a basic strategy that will help your charity auction to be a success. Don’t find yourself one month away from your auction with no large items secured. Depending on your situation and auction your “large items” might vary in value – but no matter what the dollar amount value is, be sure to secure those items as far in advance as you can. The more time you have them secured, the more time you have to market them and strategize the best way to sell them in your auction.

3. Use Proper Marketing

Proper marketing can take your charity auction to the next level. Invest in some paid advertising, utilize social media, and strategize how to get donors to the auction. For example, you could start a small raffle giveaway that starts online and the winner will be chosen live at the charity auction. This is a great way to gain exposure all while giving incentive for your potential donors and buyers to show up the night of your auction where they can see all of the rest of your items.

4. Remind Donors of the Cause

Reminding your donors and buyers of the cause of the auction is a great way to help your auction be successful. We would also recommend to be sure to provide your donors with various options to donate to the cause, not JUST through the auction. Utilize the buyers emotions, by being sure to share your cause in creative ways throughout the auction. For example if you are a non profit that helps local schools with an after school program for kids that are at risk, it would be a great idea to have a principle of one of the schools come and give a short testimony of how your nonprofit has helped them. There are many creative ways to share with your audience the mission of your charity or nonprofit. So hold a brainstorming session with your team and try to come up with at least 2-3 ways to share the cause with your buyers and donors.

charity auction

5. Order Your Items Strategically

If you have chosen to utilize a live auction for your charity event, believe it or not the order that your items are sold can make a huge difference in the success of your auction. It’s a pretty general rule of thumb to start your auction with the smallest items that you have. Starting with small items and working your way up to the larger items helps the event build suspense for your buyers and donors. Generally it is recommended to sell your biggest ticket items at about ¾ of the way through the auction. This gives your audience time to anticipate the larger attraction items, and leaves just enough time after they are sold for everyone to settle down and focus back on the more middle valued items. If your large items are sold too soon in the auction, your bigger donors who would be interested in those items will likely lose interest in the rest of the smaller items and auction.

We hope that these tips will help you plan your charity auction and set yourself up for success. No matter how you choose to plan your nonprofit auction, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to plan, gather together a team, and think through the auction step by step.

Business Liquidation and Auction Checklist

Business Liquidation and Auction Checklist

Things To Consider As You Begin The Liquidation Process

If the time has come for you to down size or even close your operations, you might be a little overwhelmed with where you can start to get the job done. Since a business liquidation is not something that most people are overly familiar with, we want to help. Miedema Asset Management Group often helps different companies with downsizing or closing down their operations as well as helping them sell some of their assets on auction to make sure that they are closing down in the best possible financial state.

Consider Working With A Professional:

Before you even begin the process, you should first and foremost consider working with a professional. Professional liquidation companies are both familiar with the process and also know how to help you get the most out of your process. They have both experience and knowledge of the entire process and can help you immensely.

business liquidation

Consider Selling Via Auction:

Another thing to think about before you begin the liquidation process, is selling your items in a liquidation auction. Liquidation auctions are super common when it comes to closing down businesses, and it’s known that this is one of the best ways to get the most money out of your business assets. Working with the Miedema Companies is a great way to get both a professional and auction house in the same company.

Gather A List Of All Your Assets:

The first thing once you have settled on a company to work with or the decision to work on your own, is to get together a list of all of your business assets. This will be the list that you work off of as you begin the liquidation process. Once you have all of your assets recorded in one place you can go through and start making the decisions on what you will want to sell on auction. If you are working with a professional liquidation company it’s likely that they will help you evaluate your assets and decide which ones that you should be selling.

Consider Getting An Appraisal:

If you are selling some larger assets such as large equipment or machinery you should consider getting an appraisal. These items could be anything from restaurant equipment to heavy machinery, to construction items, and everything in between. Getting an appraisal will help you determine the market value for some of those larger items which will in turn help you decide what prices you can expect to receive from your liquidation sale.

business liquidation

Moving on to the auction process of your business liquidation, there are many things to consider before you begin, one of the first things that you will have to do when moving forward with your liquidation auction will be to set a date for your auction. A well-chosen date and time can really help you get the most out of your liquidation auction. The first thing you will want to do is to think about whom your auction items are going to appeal to. For example, if you are a restaurant business that is liquidating your company items, you are likely going to want to target other restaurant or bar owners to buy your items, now of course no targeted audience should be exclusive, but you can have an idea of who is going to be interested in your items. The first thing to do is going to be picking a date and time that works for those people. Choose your dates and times wisely based on who is going to be likely interested in participating in your liquidation auction. The second thing that we would encourage you to consider would be to invest in proper marketing for your auction. When it’s time to put on your auction, good marketing can help you immensely in getting the most out of your items – even in the liquidation process. Making a small initial investment will likely help your return be so much larger and greater when the time comes for your items to be sold. If you have chosen to work with a professional liquidation company we would encourage you to first and foremost see if they offer any marketing options for your liquidation sale, if they do, it simplifies the process by using a company that is already involved in this important process. If not, do some research on companies that offer marketing for short-term projects like yours. In the beginning of your marketing efforts be sure to invest some time in capturing good images, as well as writing some good descriptions that describe your items well. Another thing that is smart to do is to spend some time with your team and brainstorm of your marketing goals for the auction, how much do you want to spend, what do you want to do and who do you want to reach. These goals will help point your marketing process in the right direction so that you can get the most out of your auction sale.

We hope that these few tips and things to consider help you in your business liquidation process. Working with the Miedema companies is a great way to liquidate your business items all while providing you options for appraisals, auction services, marketing packages and more. If you are searching for a company that will help you, contact us today, our team is more than happy to help you begin liquidating your business and assets to ensure that the closing or downsizing process is as simple as it can be.

Why You Should Update Your Farm Equipment at a Farm Machinery & Tractor Auction

farm equipment auction

Why You Should Update Your Farm Equipment at a Farm Machinery & Tractor Auction

The Benefits of Agricultural Auctions

Let’s just say it. Farming equipment is expensive. Whenever you invest in a new piece of machinery you shell out a lot of capital on an asset that will depreciate rather quickly. Luckily, turning to manufacturers isn’t the only option that you have to update your equipment. Agricultural equipment auctions are a fantastic way to replace your machinery. Made more popular than ever with the current market prices, auctions allow farmers to purchase quality machines for less than they would pay at a dealership. While this should be enough to sell you on agricultural auctions already, there are plenty of additional reasons why you should consider an auction the next time you are looking to update your machinery.

There are a wide variety of options:

Auctions will have many different types of equipment from a wide range of manufacturers, allowing you to compare the machinery easily. You don’t need to worry about traveling around to tons of different dealerships to find the equipment that best fits your need or has the lowest price. You can evaluate each piece and decide what you would be willing to pay. You set your price – not a dealership.

Auction prices can be cheaper than renting:

Many farmers rent different pieces of equipment depending on the season. They may not have a large enough production to justify owning a piece, or don’t have the funds available to purchase every piece of machinery that they need to complete each planting and harvesting season. However, renting will start to add up over time. In the same way that you are temporarily spending money when renting an apartment – over the long run it will probably be cheaper for you to buy a house where you will be able to recover your money if you chose to sell it. Since the prices of our equipment are below the general market prices, it may be worth it for you to directly buy a piece of machinery. You may even be able to rent your machinery out to other farmers in your area!

farm equipment auction

Buy replacement parts

If your equipment is holding out for the time being, but you know you are going to have to replace some parts in the future, consider buying them in an auction. Many auctions include attachments, accessories, and general parts of various equipment that sellers no longer need or want. Pick up different parts that you want to keep on hand, so you don’t have to worry if your equipment breaks down. Sometimes we sell equipment that isn’t in working condition. If you have the same machine in your fleet, it might be advantageous for you to purchase the machine to use for replacement parts in the future. There are a wide variety of things that you can buy besides full working pieces of equipment at an auction – you never know what you might find!

Start or expand your production:

Like we said before, equipment is expensive. If you are considering starting your own farm or increasing your production capabilities an auction is a great place to get equipment for it. You don’t have to drop a ton of money on the best and newest machines, you can test out your capacity for growth and then build up from there. Then you can check back into our future auctions to purchase more equipment to fully expand!

Farm machinery and equipment auctions are truly one of the best ways to update your machinery while still saving money. Check out our current auctions to see what agricultural equipment auctions are coming up! If you have any questions about buying or selling with us, feel free to contact us here.

How to Save on Costs When Transporting Heavy Equipment

Transporting Heavy Equipment

How to Save on Costs When Transporting Heavy Equipment

When the time comes for you to transport your equipment from point A to point B it can be costly depending on distance, and means of transportation – and for most people who might not have ever transported a heavy piece of equipment before, the task can seem a bit overwhelming as well as expensive. As you prepare to start transporting your heavy equipment or machinery, we have a few things to think about so that you are prepared and can make the most cost effective decision when it comes to transportation.

heavy equipment

Think About Distance

The distance that you are going to be transporting your heavy equipment will largely affect how you will choose to transport it as well as what options you have for moving the items. If you are only transporting your equipment a short distance, most people will find that the most cost effective way to do so will be to move and transport the equipment themselves. Most of the time, a flatbed trailer will do. Flatbed trailers generally have the ability to support several tons of weight making them a viable option for transporting especially heavy equipment. If you ARE hoping to move your equipment yourself, be sure to take into consideration all of the legalities that will also occur. You might need to purchase to obtain an oversized load permit. Make sure to do your research before you move any equipment so that you are prepared for any situation that might occur. If you don’t own a flatbed trailer, you can always rent one, and if you do not have access to one it’s possible that you would want to look into getting your equipment towed or hiring someone to transport it for you!

If you need your equipment to go a little bit further, you will want to look into various shipping options. Shipping your equipment might include it traveling via train, semi, or maybe even boat depending on where it is going! If you are going to ship your equipment, make sure to get various quotes from different shipping agencies or companies to make sure that you are getting the best rate to send your items where they need to go.

Consider Disassembling Your Equipment

Regardless if you are going to be moving your equipment yourself or hiring someone else to do it, disassembling your equipment is a creative way to save you a few bucks. Disassembling your equipment can reduce the dimensions if you are shipping your equipment, and if you are transporting your own equipment, it can allow you to load up your equipment more efficiently and make it easier to handle each individual piece rather than the equipment as a whole. If your equipment does not run, disassembling is a great way to transport your equipment simply because you might not be able to drive/move it independently. Even if you do not disassemble your equipment into many parts, you will always want to remove any detachable parts such as buckets, forks, etc. and secure them separately.

Other Things To Consider & Save You Money

A few other things to consider when you are preparing to move your machines, equipment, and large heavy items are insurance, safety checks, permits, and maintenance.

Insurance

Insurance is important to consider before you move any equipment by any means. If anything were to happen during transit, you will want to be covered. There will always be some sort of risk involved in the movement of your heavy equipment and machinery – and having insurance can help you protect yourself from having to pay for any needed repairs if something is damaged or accidentally broken.

heavy equipment

Safety Checks

Safety checks are a good way to make sure that everything is in good condition before transport, also allowing you to recognize quickly if any part or piece of your machine is damaged in transit. Safety checks can also help you identify any potential issues that might arise so that you can address them quickly and make sure that they don’t become a bigger issue down the road!

Permits

As we stated earlier, making sure that you have the correct permits is so important before transport especially if you are transporting the equipment yourself. Be sure to put in the time and research to making sure that you have the proper permits to move your equipment as needed. If you hire someone move your heavy equipment for you, it’s more likely that they have a good idea of what permits are needed and what legalities there are to follow – we would still encourage you to inquire about what permits they have acquired.

Maintenance

Maintenance before moving your items is necessary in specific situations. Mostly if you have elected to ship your machinery, we would suggest that you maintain your equipment as well as drain it of all its fluids and disconnect the battery and hoses as necessary and applicable. Doing this helps you transport your equipment and items more safely and will also is just a preventive precaution to have a safe, clean transport.

These are just a few things to consider and think about while you prepare to transport your equipment from point A to point B – wherever that might be.
If you are trying to transport your equipment to sell it, consider our auction services. Save the money and time of transporting your items by having Orbitbid come to your location and host your own auction from your very own site!
